Most European built cars today use a digital system called CANBUS to transmit control signals, including speed pulse, around the car. An add-on interface is required to convert the digital signals to analogue signals that the Japanese built navigation systems use.
Clarion have added the NP509E and SA509 to provide stand-alone navigation to any headunit with an external video input and VGA display. This discrete unit relies entirely on GPS, so doesn't require a speed pulse.
